Luke 21:20-24

Jesus now connects His teaching about future things from the persecution that will come to those who follow Him to the future destruction of the city of Jerusalem which was the question that started this section of the coming of things in the future (Luke 21:5-7).

Jesus describes the wrath of God that will come on Jerusalem due to the Israelites’ hardened hearts at Him and His message of salvation. Jesus notes that Jerusalem will be overrun by the Gentiles, which has already begun through the Romans. But Jesus also notes a positive thing about the Gentiles in the fulfilling of the time of the Gentiles. The Apostle Paul speaks of the importance of the fall of Jerusalem in the time of the Gentiles being necessary for Jesus to extend salvation to the Gentiles (Romans 11:11-36).

This is a promise of the fall of Jerusalem.

This is a promise of salvation being extended to the Gentiles through the fall of Jerusalem due to the hardness of the Israelites’ hearts in turning away from God.

This is a promise of salvation being extended to all people.

The Old Testament book of Malachi, which is the last book in the Old Testament, contains the prophecy of what Jesus is saying in this passage. The Apostle Paul explains this further in Acts 28:23-31. God chose the Israelite people in the Old Testament to be an example to the world of following the one and only true God of creation; that He was the Almighty God of heaven, and that there are no other true gods. If God created all man, which He did (Genesis 1:26-28), then all man needs to know this, but in showing this to the world, God chose a people to be this example to all the world that the world would see His power through the obedience/disobedience of the chosen people. Through this statement made by Jesus is the point in which God chose to reveal salvation to the world (John 3:16-17) and the results of accepting Jesus as our Savior, or not (John 3:18-21).

Dear Lord,

Thank You for revealing in Your Word that salvation is for all man and that Jesus is our Savior. Please help us to see and understand Your great plan of salvation through Jesus that we would put our trust in Him and receive this great gift of life that Your offer to us all through Him. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
