Luke 1:67-79
After Zacharias was freed from being mute, he was filled with the Holy Spirit and given the revelation that became his song. This song is full of reference to the Old Testament prophecies that are now being fulfilled through the birth of John the Baptist (who will announce the coming of the Messiah) and the birth of Jesus (the Messiah).
Luke 1:68 could be the fulfillment of Isaiah 62:11-12 (NKJV) which states,
“Indeed the LORD has proclaimed
To the end of the world:
‘Say to the daughter of Zion,
“Surely your salvation is coming;
Behold, His reward is with Him,
And His work before Him.”’
And they shall call them The Holy
People,
The Redeemed of the LORD;
And you shall be called Sought Out,
A City Not Forsaken.”
Luke 1:69 could be related to the words of King David in Psalm 18:1-2 as he proclaims,
“I will love You, O LORD, my strength.
The LORD is my rock and my fortress
and my deliverer;
My God, my strength, in whom I will
trust;
My shield and the horn of my salvation,
my stronghold.”
Luke1:70-75 could be related to the many prophecies found throughout the Old Testament such as Isaiah 61:11 which declares,
“For as the earth brings forth its bud,
As the garden causes the things that
are sown in it to spring forth,
So the Lord God will cause
righteousness and praise to spring
forth before all the nations.”
Luke 1:76-79 are related to Zacharias’ son, John the Baptist, in proclaiming the coming Messiah and verified in Mark 1:1-4. The Old Testament prophesies of this are Malachi 3:1 which states,
“‘Behold, I send My messenger,
And he will prepare the way before Me.
And the Lord, whom you seek,
Will suddenly come to His temple,
Even the Messenger of the covenant,
In whom you delight.
Behold, He is coming,’
Says the LORD of hosts.”
And the words found in Isaiah 40:3-5 proclaiming,
“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the LORD;
Make straight in the desert
A highway for our God.
Every valley shall be exalted
And every mountain and hill brought
low;
The crooked places shall be made
straight
And the rough places smooth;
The glory of the LORD shall be revealed,
And all flesh shall see it together;
For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.’”
Luke 1:79 is in reference to the message of our Savior Jesus Christ, which we may read throughout the four Gospels; Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
This is a song of praise to God in the presence of the revelation of the coming Messiah.
Zacharias was a priest, and being hesitant to believe the message sent to him by the angel Gabriel, was made mute in his disobedience. Once he was made able to speak, the Lord spoke a prophetic message through him, and is in close relation to the song of Mary (Luke 1:46-55) and also the prayer of Hannah at the birth of her son Samuel as found in 1 Samuel 2:1-10.
God is prepared to do great things through each of us if we will believe in Him and seek His will for our lives. Sometimes He teaches us how to do this by allowing us to reap the consequences of our own decisions that we have made without seeking His guidance. He is there waiting for us to ask and seek Him.
Dear Lord,
You have spoken through Zacharias even though he had trouble believing in Your message that You sent to him by Your angel Gabriel. But You taught him by his mistake and then allowed him to proclaim in song that his son would announce the coming of the long awaited Messiah. Please help us to see that we have all made mistakes in the past, and we will all make mistakes in the future. We are not perfect, and we live in a fallen, sinful world. Please teach us through our mistakes that we may grow in our relationship with You, and give us the confidence that when we fall, You are there waiting to forgive us by Your unfailing mercy and grace if we will humble ourselves to You and ask. Thank You LORD! In Jesus name I pray, amen.
