Luke 16:1-13

In this parable taught by Jesus, an unjust steward is called to account for his actions by his master and informed that he would lose his position as steward. The unjust steward then devises a plan that would benefit him after he is relieved of his duties as steward. He calls in his master’s debtors one by one and reduces their debt and finds favor in their eyes.

The unjust steward was commended by his master for acting shrewdly as he used his resources in a creative way to accomplish his goal, and this is what he was commended for; being creative; finding a way to turn a bad situation into a good one. The lesson that Jesus appears to be giving in this parable is for the Christian to be as shrewd as this steward; to find a way to overcome the sinful nature. The way is to keep our focus on Jesus; He is the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6).

This is a command and example to not give up; trust in Jesus that He will show you the way.

The unjust steward was removed from his position because of his unjust actions, but even this unjust person can teach us all a lesson; NEVER GIVE UP!
We tend to keep our focus on Jesus while the road is smooth, and then when times get tough, we try to figure things out for ourselves which results in our falling further away from Jesus. The first thing we should do when times get tough is to ask Jesus for help. He has promised to be with us always (Matthew 28:20). Jesus states that we cannot serve two masters; we cannot be children of God and continue to live in the sinful nature. We must make a choice. Joshua declared, “But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15, NKJV).

Dear Lord,

This passage teaches us that we can learn from anyone, even an unjust steward. As he was sinful but found a way to be safe in the future, we have a way in Your Son Jesus to prepare for the safety of our future by repenting from sin and asking You to forgive us of our sins.  Please open our eyes so that we may see the life that You offer us through Your Son Jesus, our Savior. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
