Luke 13:18-19

As Jesus teaches in the synagogue, He has just scolded the ruler of the synagogue and challenged the people’s way of thinking in His words about healing on the Sabbath day. His adversaries were put to shame and the crowd rejoiced at the glorious things that Jesus had done.

In Luke 13:18-19, Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a mustard seed. The comparison is that the mustard seed is the smallest of all seeds, and this fact would most likely have been known by those who were listening to Jesus. As Jesus came from heaven, not many people believed in Him, but as the knowledge of Jesus grew, so would His kingdom of heaven.

This is an example of the birth of Christianity and the promise of its growth.

The Israelites expected the Messiah to come with a powerful sweep of the sword in conquering Rome and set the people free from the oppression of the Roman empire which governed the area at that time. Jesus came as a small babe and then grew to be known as the Savior of the world (Luke 2:7; John 3:16-17). God’s kingdom is growing every day, and as we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we begin our relationship with Him as babes in Christ (1 Peter 2:1-3). As we grow and mature in our relationship with Him through daily prayer, study of His Word (the Bible), and fellowship with others, His kingdom will grow in our hearts and reveal the unlimited mercy and grace that He offers to the world in the unlimited growth of His kingdom of heaven.

Dear Lord,

Thank You for including us in Your kingdom of heaven through what Jesus has done for us on the cross. Please help us to see that it is our responsibility as Your children (John 1:12-13) to spread the gospel to all creation (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15; Luke 24:46-47; John 20:21; Acts 1:8) in doing our part to help Your kingdom grow. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
