Luke 12:29-31

According to the Old Testament Law, God had given rules and regulations as to what was “clean” or “unclean” in respect to the animals that were allowed to be eaten (Leviticus 11). This was one step in the Old Testament Law that was based on works; what one was to do to accomplish righteousness for himself or herself. The point of the Old Testament Law was to show humanity that we are not capable, due to sin, to live a life that adheres to all the commandments of the Law. The Law was given to show man that he is incapable of becoming righteous in and of himself (Romans 3:23). The Law was given to show man the need for a Savior (Romans 5:20-21).

Jesus came to fulfill the Old Testament Law for humanity. This is how Jesus can claim the words He said in John 14:6; He is the way, the truth, and the life. And the second part is just as important; that no one comes to the Father except through Him. This is because He is the only one that has ever or will ever fulfill the Old Testament Law. This is why the New Testament is called the New Testament; because Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament and now the righteousness sought in the Old Testament is found in Him.

The Old testament Law was given in all its rules and regulations so one could show his obedience to God, but because of sin no one was able to accomplish this. Jesus accomplished this for everyone and now offers the reward of His accomplishment to everyone by the mercy and grace of God so that we may find the fulfillment of the Old Testament Law through Him. So in this passage (Luke 12:29-31) Jesus is saying that He has fulfilled these requirements and they are no longer a necessity for man to seek, but in believing in Him and putting one’s focus on seeking the kingdom of God (Luke 12:31) the things that we could not accomplish can now be found…in Him.

This is a command to seek fulfillment in Jesus.

This is a command to seek the kingdom of God.

This is a promise that in doing so, fulfillment will be found in Jesus.

This holds true still today for each and every one of us. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father and finds the fulfillment that our hearts seek except through Jesus (John 14:6). We cannot earn our way to heaven; the road was paved by Jesus and must go through Jesus. He is our Savior. Put your trust in Him and find fulfillment.

Dear Lord,

Thank You for sending Your one and only Son to save the world from sin (John 3:16-17).  Please help us to see that Jesus fulfilled the works of the Old Testament Law through His perfect sinless death on the cross and that it was done for everyone, which includes every one of us. Please help us to see the fulfillment that is found in Jesus so that we all would receive Him and become Your children for eternity (John 1:12-13). In Jesus name I pray, amen.
