Luke 12:13-15
In this passage, a man is seeking for his earthly inheritance to be divided between his brother and himself. He is requesting Jesus to command his brother to do so (Luke 12:13). But Jesus does not concern Himself with the trivial things of this world and He advises the man to be aware of covetousness. Jesus instructs the man that “life” does not consist in the abundance of a man’s possessions (Luke 12:15).
This is an example to be aware of where we place our focus on life.
This is an example to be aware of covetousness.
This is a command that we should place our focus on Jesus with a sincere heart to be pleasing to our Father in heaven.
To covet is to have a desire to have something that belongs to someone else. To covet is to exhibit selfish, arrogant pride that is concerned only with oneself. Jesus is teaching this man that to put his faith in his possessions, or the amount of possessions that he has is a useless attempt to satisfy the soul; his heart will still be longing for the fulfillment that can only be obtained through salvation in Jesus. Earthly possessions cannot and will not satisfy the longing in one’s heart.
When we die, we will stand before the God of heaven stripped bare, with no earthly possessions or wealth obtained through this world, and the sincerity of our hearts will be the focus of that moment. Will your sincerity of heart be focused on Jesus?
Dear Lord,
Please help us to see that while the possessions of this world may make our lives more comfortable now, they will be of no use in earning our eternity in heaven. Please help us to see that the only way to eternity in heaven is through Your Son, our Savior, Jesus as He states in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
