Luke 11:52
Jesus began His woes to the Pharisees in Luke 11:42 and includes the scribes in His third woe spoken in Luke 11:44. A lawyer (scribe) questions the reproach of Jesus in Luke 11:45 and Jesus directs His attention to the actions of the lawyers for three more woe’s in Luke 11:46, 47, and 52. The Lawyers of which were the scribes were the ones who copied the Scriptures in efforts to preserve them and provide copies to the priests. The scribes were considered to be the most knowledgeable professionals of the Law because they studied and copied these Holy words as a profession.
In Luke 11:52 Jesus is rebuking the lawyers because they have instructed the people of Israel in the law of the Old Testament Scriptures not as a learning and growing tool for the benefit of God’s chosen people, but as burdensome rules that are intended to oppress the people, and because of this hindered those who were seeking God’s will in their lives and prevented them from drawing closer to God.
This is an example of using God’s Word for selfish gain in the arrogance and prideful way in which Lucifer (Satan) sinned against God and fell from heaven.
This is an example of how Satan will trick us into falling away from God; because as he fell, he wants us all to fall also.
Pride and arrogance lacks humility. This is what caused Lucifer to fall from his highly honorable position in heaven (Ezekiel 28:11-19). God created man to bring Him glory; glory that once was portrayed/reflected by Lucifer in heaven. Satan is jealous of humanity in being his replacement in bringing/reflecting glory to God, a position that was created in perfection. In his jealousy, Satan has made it his goal to cause every man/woman to fall from a relationship with our Creator God, just as he has.
This is why Jesus came; to save the world from sin, death, and the grasp of Satan. Jesus came to offer forgiveness of sin, to give life, and to break the grasp that Satan has on humanity. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). The only way we can overcome Satan is to accept the gift that Jesus came to offer us. Jesus reconnects us to our Father in heaven; without Him, Satan will overcome us with pride, arrogance, selfishness, and a whole arsenal of sin that we cannot overcome on our own. Choose Jesus and begin living a life of glorifying God as His will was for us from the beginning.
Dear Lord,
If Satan can overcome the Pharisees, lawyers, and scribes of Your chosen people who were the professionals of keeping the Scriptures, then he can certainly overcome us too. Please help us to see that Jesus is the only way to overcome the attacks of Satan and receive forgiveness and eternal life in heaven with You. Help us to shun the prideful arrogant ways of Satan through believing in Jesus and calling out to Him for help. Please help us to repent from our selfish ways and turn to a new life in Jesus and we seek Your will for our lives. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
