Luke 11:1-4
As we have given a study of the Lord’s Prayer, I felt it important that we take a moment and give respect to the ending of the Lord’s Prayer that is noted in Matthew 6:13. It is important to notice and believe that God’s kingdom is His kingdom. In Lucifer’s fall from heaven (Isaiah 14:12-15) and from being the reflection of God’s glory (Isaiah 14:14-17; Ezekiel 28:17), he became arrogant and believed that he could become greater than God and that he could rule God’s kingdom in and of himself (Ezekiel 28:1-19). This is where spiritual warfare began. This is where sin began, as Lucifer fell from heaven like a bolt of lightning as Jesus declares in Luke 10:18. Not that sin began in heaven, but that God was able to know in His omniscience (all knowing) that Lucifer was about to sin, and in so, cast Lucifer and the angels that were about to sin with him simultaneously out of heaven (Revelation 12:7-9). The kingdom of God is God’s only, and Lucifer or anyone else will never be able to become more powerful than the Almighty God and take His kingdom from Him. Which in turn takes us to the next point of this ending of the Lord’s Prayer, and that is “power.”
Lucifer began to think as he was the reflection of God’s glory that he could obtain a “power” that would be greater than that of the Almighty God (Ezekiel 28:2-6). But Lucifer is a created being (Ezekiel 28:12-13) and the created cannot rule the Creator (Isaiah 45:9-10). Lucifer, in all the splendor of being the reflection of God’s glory throughout all of heaven, became arrogant (Isaiah 14:12-14; Ezekiel 28:2-5) and desired to become greater than God. This is what caused Lucifer to be cast out of heaven as it signified a disobedience to God and an arrogant, self-centered perspective. Power belongs to God alone (Psalm 62:11).
And thirdly, glory. This is what Lucifer was trying to take from the Almighty God of heaven; His glory. Lucifer wanted to be glorified above God. To God belongs all glory (Revelation 4:11). We were created to be to the praise of His glory (Ephesians 1:11-14) and not to seek glory for ourselves as God alone is worthy of all glory. This is why Lucifer (Satan) attacks us each day; he is jealous of us doing what he was initially created to do but failed.
The kingdom, the power, and the glory all belong to the Almighty God of heaven, and these three things are what, through the growth of arrogance, self-centeredness and pride caused the fall of Lucifer, whom was created to be the reflection of God’s glory, and yet believed in himself instead of God as the source of the power and glory. God then created man to be to the praise of His glory in replacing Lucifer. And in heaven, man is granted the gift of eternal life through salvation in Jesus, which in itself is giving glory to God. Lucifer (now called Satan) in his jealousy will strive his best to keep everyone away from Jesus because we are the new glory of God as we accept Jesus and strive to follow Him each day and let His light (glory) shine through us as children of God (John 1:12-13).
This is the importance of the final line of the Lord’s Prayer as found in Matthew 6:13.
There is a lot to be taken in through study of the prayer given by Jesus to His disciples (and us). In this prayer is the whole of our relationship with our Creator God. If we will apply this prayer to our lives, we will find life in it through the one who gave it first; Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.
Dear Lord,
Thank You for helping us to see the importance of prayer in the prayer given to us by Jesus, Your Son and our Savior. I pray that we will all find life eternal through this prayer and the study of it, that we would be to the praise of Your glory and welcomed into it when You call us home. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
