Jude 8-11
In Jude 5-7, Jude gave three large scale examples of disobedience to God in the examples of the disobedient Israelites, the disobedient angels, and the disobedient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. In Jude 8-11, Jude gives personal examples of obedience and disobedience to God: one of the obedience of the archangel Michael; and three of the disobedience to God in the example of Cain, Balaam and Korah. Jude notes, “9Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you! (Jude 9, NKJV). The Bible teaches us about the disobedience of Cain in Genesis 4:1-15, the disobedience of Balaam in Numbers 22-24, and the disobedience of Korah in Numbers 16.
This is a promise and example that choosing to be obedient to God’s will for our lives is a personal decision.
The anger of Cain, the greed of Balaam, and the rebellion of Korah are all issues that we continue to face in the world today. The decision to be obedient or disobedient to God is a personal decision that can lead to the pressures of following the crowd. This indicates the importance of rendering our lives to God through His Holy Spirit working in the hearts and souls of those who profess His One and only Son Jesus as their Savior. Jesus promised the indwelling of His Holy Spirit for all who will believe in Him (John 14:15-18), and states in John 14:26, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” God will lead us through His Holy Spirit, but it is our duty to listen to His guidance, and then to follow it – In Christ.
Dear LORD,
Your servant Jude has brought our attention to the false teachers and those who have made decisions to be disobedient and rebellious to You and Your will for our lives. Please help us to realize and understand that as You are loving and forgiving, You are also just, and it is our own decision to put You first in our lives as You call us to You – In Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
