James 3:13

James changes gears from the evils of the tongue to seeking those who are wise and understanding (James 3:13a, NKJV).  He then gives instruction for those who are wise and understanding to (James 3:13b), “Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom.”

This is a promise that the understanding of the wise will be seen through their meekness of the wisdom that they have been given.

It is very easy for one who is wise to present themselves as arrogant, prideful, boastful, and self-centered.  But James tells us that the understanding of the wise will be seen through their meekness of their wisdom.  Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:5 (NIV), “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.”  But what exactly is “meekness?”  To be meek is defined by Merriam-Webster as, “Characterized by patience and longsuffering.”  To be meek is reflective of humility and is a quality that is evident in the life of Jesus – an example that we should strive to follow and make evident in our lives.  James tells us that one who is truly wise in the Lord will be known by his meekness and that his works will be reflective of Jesus, showing compassion and love for others.

Dear LORD,

We all desire to be wise in understanding and in our relationship with You through our savior Jesus.  But please help us to see that wise understanding in Jesus is not prideful, boastful, condescending, or self-centered; but reflective of the qualities that we possess through our Savior Jesus – who came not to be served, but to serve others and give His life as a ransom for many (Matthew 20:25-28).  Please help us to strive each day to be reflective of Jesus.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
