Hebrews 7:4-10

The author of Hebrews further exemplifies Melchizedek in his superior status to that of Abraham, the one who received the blessing and promise from God.  Abraham paid a tithe to Melchizedek, and in so, shows that the priesthood of Melchizedek is superior to the priesthood which came through Abraham in the Levitical priesthood after the law was given through Moses.

This is a promise and example that the priesthood of Melchizedek is greater than that of the Levitical priesthood.

This is a promise and example of one who is greater than Abraham.

The author of Hebrews has taken time to show us the superiority of the priesthood of Melchizedek to that of Abraham, who received the promise from God.  We also have learned that the priesthood of Melchizedek is superior to that of the priesthood of the Levites, which was the priesthood of the Law that God gave to Moses.  Why is this important?  Because it shows us that there is a way that is superior to the Law – a priesthood that is eternal – a priesthood that is of Christ Jesus who came to fulfill the Law (Matthew 5:17).  This is to show us that the priesthood of Jesus is superior to the Law, and that through our faith in Him we are granted righteousness as was Abraham; not through the law that was not yet put in place during Abraham’s day, but through his faith in God he was considered righteous (Genesis 15:6).

Dear LORD,

When Your plan of salvation for humanity was introduced through Abraham You did not leave out any details.  You gave a promise to Abraham, and then You gave the Law through the descendants of Abraham in the twelve tribes of Israel, the priesthood of the Levites, and the leader You chose for them in Moses.  But You also showed from the beginning of Your plan of salvation for all humanity of a superior priesthood to the Law in that of Melchizedek.  It is through the eternal order of Melchizedek that Jesus is High Priest.  Thank You for our eternal King, High Priest, and Savior Jesus who is faithful to forgive all who will come to Him today with a sincere open heart asking forgiveness – for all eternity – in Christ.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
