Hebrews 7:23-25

The author of Hebrews shows us the everlasting priesthood of Jesus in superiority to that of the Levitical/Aaronic priesthood for an additional reason: the priests of the Levitical priesthood was ever changing due to death, but the priesthood of Jesus is everlasting and unchanging – there is no longer a need to replace the High Priest Jesus because He lives forever.  We have already learned the prophecy of Psalm 110:4 (NKJV) which states,

“The LORD has sworn

             And will not relent,

            ‘You are a priest forever

             According to the order of

                        Melchizedek’”

The author of Hebrews goes on in Hebrews 7:25 to teach that because the priesthood of Jesus is everlasting, (NKJV) “He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.”  Psalm 110:1 (ESV) states,

“The LORD says to my Lord;

‘Sit at my right hand,

until I make your enemies your footstool.’”

As Jesus sits at the right hand of the Almighty God in heaven for all eternity, He is present to intercede for those who put their faith in Him, that His righteousness may be present before the Almighty God of heaven in the lives of those who believe in Him.

This is an example of the importance of the everlasting priesthood of Jesus: to intercede for all who put their faith in Him.

There is no longer a need for a sacrifice to be given to God for sin, because Jesus is the everlasting sacrifice that made atonement for all sins through His purity which fulfilled the Law.  The old covenant of the Law has been renewed in Christ JesusHe did the work for us to salvation.  He sits at the right hand of God to intercede for us for eternity.  He is the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6).

The simplicity of believing in Jesus is this:

  • “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37, NIV).
  • “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39, NIV).

These are the commandments of Jesus.  But they cannot be followed without first confessing your sins to Jesus and asking His forgiveness.  Your heart must become open to receive God’s Holy Spirit in an attitude of repentance to turn from the sinful nature of this world to a new life in Christ Jesus.  With this sincerity of heart to God, He is faithful and will forgive you.  With His Holy Spirit for an everlasting guide living within your heart, you will not only be able to put God first in your life, but you will learn to love your neighbor as yourself and experience the forgiven life in Christ Jesus that God has intended for you to have – in Christ.

Dear LORD,

You have given us Jesus as our everlasting High Priest to intercede for us in forgiveness of our sins through His sacrifice for us on the cross.  Thank You!  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
