Hebrews 5:6-11

These verses of Hebrews 5:6-11 give additional support for the preceding verse 5 in that, (NKJV) “Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He [God] who said to Him:”, these things recorded in Hebrews 5:5-6.  Hebrews 5:6 proclaims that Jesus is a High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek, who is also mentioned in Hebrews 5:10-11.  Further information is given of Melchizedek in Hebrews 7:1-3 as “king of righteousness” and “king of peace” throughout all eternity past and present.  But we must not overlook Hebrews 5:7-9 which tell of the life and growth of Jesus in learning and developing in His human aspects.  He suffered and learned the struggles of becoming obedient to God as a human.  He cried out to God in prayers and supplications/earnest petitions.  And through it all, He was perfected in the ways of man as He remained sinless throughout His human life.  This prepared Him to become the author of salvation for all of mankind who will obey Him (Hebrews 5:9).  The author of Hebrews gives one last note in Hebrews 5:11 that those who he is speaking/writing to have made these things hard to explain because they (NIV), “no longer try to understand.”

This is a promise of the qualifications of Jesus as High Priest.

This is an example that Jesus offered prayers and supplications to God, just as we do.

This is an example that Jesus experienced the struggles of life as a human but yet remained sinless.

The author of Hebrews is teaching us about the need to be made right with God for salvation.  He is teaching us about how Jesus is qualified to be our Savior as He too suffered in His physical life yet remained sinless.  Just as we suffer, so too did Jesus suffer.  But Jesus did not fall to the temptation of sin while He suffered, but He did cry out to God in prayers and supplications just as we do in time of need.

Jesus has been called by God to be our everlasting High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek, the “King of righteousness” and the “King of peace” as is described in Hebrews 7:1-3 (NKJV).  Jesus feels our needs and hurts because He has experienced temptation in “all points” (Hebrews 5:15, NKJV).  The author of Hebrews is teaching us the gospel – the good news of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior who is worthy to save us all from sin if we will believe in Him.

Dear LORD,

Please help us to see that Jesus is worthy to be our Savior as He suffered in “all points” of being tempted and yet did not fall to the temptation.  He overcame.  Please help us to see that He can help us to overcome sin if we will put our faith in Him and seek Your will for our lives each day.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
