Hebrews 3:2-6

Considering Jesus (Hebrews 3:1), a faithful servant appointed by God Almighty (Hebrews 3:2) is now compared to Moses, a faithful servant of God and the receiver of the Law (Exodus 19-24).  God spoke directly to Moses and he was faithful to God in all he did.  The author of Hebrews has shown that Jesus is higher in authority than that of the High Priest Aaron (Hebrews 3:1), and now uses a reference to the authority of Moses being higher than that of Aaron (Numbers 12:7) in showing that Jesus is also higher in authority than that of God’s faithful servant Moses.

This comparison is given in that of a house, and not that of a physical house or of building a physical house, but that of leading a nation or people such as that of the “house of the Lord.”  The comparison goes as that of Moses; one appointed to oversee the house/people/nation to that of Jesus being the builder of the house as to be the owner of the house.  Hebrews 3:5-6 quotes Numbers 12:7 and explains this clearly and gives the connection/fulfillment of the Law as an example through Moses of what was to come in Christ Jesus.  Hebrews 3:5-6 (NIV) states, “‘Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house,’ bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future.  But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house.  And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.”

This is a promise of Jesus being higher in authority than that of Moses as a faithful servant.

There are many heroes in the Bible in which one may desire to pattern their life after, but there is one hero in which we all should pattern our lives after – Jesus.  He is our teacher to salvation – in Him, and as proclaimed in Acts 4:12 (ESV), “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”  Jesus is the High Priest and Jesus is the faithful servant.  He is the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6).  “But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house.  And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory” (Hebrews 3:6, NIV).

Dear LORD,

The author of Hebrews is teaching us that Jesus is above all in authority as He and You are One along with Your Holy Spirit.  Please send Your Holy Spirit to work in each of our lives to draw us closer to You through salvation in Christ Jesus our Savior, High Priest, and Faithful Servant, that we all would, “hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory” (Hebrews 3:6).  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
