Hebrews 1:7

The author of Hebrews quotes Psalm 104:4 as a reference to showing that God makes the angels His servants, and in so exemplifying the fact that Jesus is above them.  In Psalm 104:4, the word “spirits” can also be translated as “winds” as is in the (NIV) as follows, “He makes winds his messengers, flames of fire his servants.”  In Matthew 8 Jesus calms a storm and saves His disciples from certain catastrophe by giving a command to the wind and the sea.  Matthew 8:23-27 (ESV) states, “And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him.  And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep.  And they went and woke him, saying, ‘Save us, Lord, we are perishing.’  And he said to them, ‘Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?’  Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.  And the men marveled, saying, ‘What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?’”  We will soon study Hebrews 1:14 which speaks of the role of angels and adds to our understanding of today’s Bible study.  In it, the author states (NKJV), “Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?”

This is continued Biblical support that Jesus is above the angels.

We may want to think of Jesus as an angel sent by God, and as in spiritual form they have similarities.  But we must not lower Jesus to the status of created beings such as that of the angels.  Jesus has always existed as God and with God in His ultimate spiritual being but was required to become or to be transferred into a physical form to be the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of man: the sins of man was required to be redeemed by a man.  There has never been a man without sin to accomplish this mission, so God sent Himself in the form of a man as Jesus to do for man what no man could do – overcome sin, death (the penalty for sin), and Satan (who is the leader of the rebellion of sin against God).  While this was taking place, God was also required to remain in spirit as the Ultimate Authority, thus being required to be two separate entities at the same time, and not just two, but three as God has worked through His Holy Spirit to whomever He has chosen throughout all of history.  God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

Dear LORD,

Thank You for these lessons in our study of the book of Hebrews that teach us of the ultimate superiority of Jesus, and that You and He are One with Your Holy Spirit.  Please continue to open our hearts, minds, and souls to Your ultimate saving mercy and grace through our Savior Jesus.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
