Hebrews 12:18-24

In Exodus 19-20 is the story of God speaking to Moses and the Israelites from Mount Sinai.  In it is demonstrated the power and might of God in His holiness.  In preparation for, and in giving the Law to Moses, the Israelites were fearful of the wrath of God being unleashed upon them.  The author of Hebrews quotes from Exodus 19:12-13 and Deuteronomy 9:19 in showing the fear of God that came over the Israelites as God made His presence known to them.

The author of Hebrews contrasts this with those who put their faith in God coming to God’s holy city of Mount Zion in which is gathered, “an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and the church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel” (Hebrews 12:22-24, NKJV).  In Genesis 4:10 the blood of Able cried out to God in declaring the guilt of sin in the life of his brother Cain who had killed him.

This is a promise and example that the Law given at Mount Sinai was to show the guilt of those who break God’s commandments.

This is a promise and example that the new covenant in Christ Jesus is to show the forgiveness by His blood shed for the forgiveness of sins in His new heavenly city of Mount Zion.

The law given to Moses at Mount Sinai was to reveal sin and God’s wrath in man’s disobedience, but Jesus came to set us free from the wrath of God because of sin, that we may be set free from it through His blood shed on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins that all who put their faith in Him will come to the heavenly city of Mount Zion for eternity.  The blood shed in the Old Testament was shed to show the guilt of mankind in sin; but the blood of Christ Jesus was shed in innocence to purify sin for all who will put their faith in Him as Lord and Savior.  Jesus will save you from God’s wrath if you will put your faith in Him today and declare Him your Lord and Savior, with a sincere heart to ask of His forgiveness for your sins, and begin living a new life seeking His will for your life each day.

Dear LORD,

Thank You for sending Jesus to save us from Your wrath declared for all who are found guilty of sin.  Thank You for salvation in Jesus that sets our hearts free from sin and declares a new life for all who will put their faith in Him that we may live eternal in Your holy city of Mount Zion.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
