Hebrews 11:1-3

The author of Hebrews moves from encouraging his hearers to have faith, and the importance of it, to giving a definition of faith.  He states in Hebrews 11:1 (NKJV), “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”  Through faith one is able to obtain a “good testimony” (Hebrews 11:2).  Faith is the necessary ingredient in understanding that God created the heavens and the earth through His word, and not by things which were visible as God has created all things through speaking them into existence (Genesis 1:1, 3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24, 26, 29; 2:18).

This is a definition of faith.

This is an example of the necessity of our faith in God.

We all have faith in something, whether we are aware of it or not.  We have faith that when we turn the key in the ignition of our car or truck, it will start.  We don’t know it, but we believe it.  We all have faith that in the springtime, the grass in our yards will begin to grow.  We can’t see how the grass grows, but we believe it will – we know it!  We also cannot see God, but through faith we know that He exists.  Just as we see the results of the grass growing, we can see the results of God working in our lives – for all who believe in Him.  Faith is not something that is used only in religious belief, but a force that we all utilize every day.  Knowing this, I ask you…do you believe in God?  Do you believe that He sent His one and only Son to save you from the penalty for sin?  By having faith in Jesus, He will save you from eternal condemnation and give you life – basking in God’s glory for eternity.  Trust Jesus, and ask of His forgiveness today, and begin a new life – a forgiven life as a gift from God.

Dear LORD,

It is hard for many people to have faith in something in which they cannot see.  But yet we all utilize faith every day.  Please help us to see that You are real and that You have given us a Savior to set us free from sin – through our faith in Him – the way, the truth, and the life – Jesus (John 14:6).  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
