Hebrews 1:1 (NKJV)

The author of this letter/book of the New Testament is commonly believed to be unknown.  He begins this letter by giving an overview of how God spoke in the Old Testament.  From the beginning of God’s creation of man in the Old Testament, God has communicated with man in different ways.  In Genesis, God is recorded as having direct conversation with Adam, Noah, Abraham, and Moses; to name a few.  Later, God introduces the prophets as His spokespeople in that of Elijah, Elisha, Samuel, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Daniel amongst others.

This is an example of how God communicated with man before He sent His one and only Son Jesus to save the world from sin.

The historical value of the Old Testament is great in that God reveals to us the need for salvation from the sinful nature.  He shows us that without His guidance the world turns further and further away from obedience to Him and from His desire for us as His greatest creation to bring Him glory.  In the midst of it all, “in various times and in various ways,” (Hebrews 1:1, NKJV) God reveals the coming of a Messiah to save His people.  When He sent the Messiah, He would unleash arguably the greatest conflict of the New Testament: God’s great power would offer salvation to all man; not just the Israelites, but all who will believe in the Savior.

Dear LORD,

As we dive into Your Word and begin a new study in the book of Hebrews, give us open hearts and open minds to learn as You reveal to us Your ultimate plan of salvation for all man – in Christ.  In Jesus name I pray, amen.
