Ephesians 2:7-10

“that in the ages to come” (Ephesians 2:7a) shows that what we have been reading in the prior verses is not just for the “saints who are in Ephesus, and faithful in Christ Jesus:” (Ephesians 1:1) at that particular time in history, but for all the faithful in Christ, everywhere, throughout the world, until the end of time. We are saved by God’s grace, through our faith in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:8–9).

Grace is the giving of something (good) to someone who is undeserving of it. We did not do anything to deserve or earn salvation in Christ, if we did, we could say, “look at what I’ve done,” “look at me.” This is the very thing that Lucifer did to cause his fall from heaven in disobedience to God (Isaiah 14:12–15; Luke 10:18). Christ teaches us to humble ourselves before Him in repentance. Repentance means to turn from our current path and begin a new way of life—to turn away from the evil ways of this world and begin seeking the ways of Christ. Our life in Christ is for good works, not that we do good works to earn salvation, but as we accept the gift of salvation in Christ as our Savior, we then do the good works as He leads us through the receiving and guidance of His Holy Spirit (Ephesians 2:10).

This is a promise of salvation by grace through faith in Christ Jesus.

This is a promise of what salvation is not.

This is a command that we are created for good works, not saved by our good works.

I thank the Lord for opening the door to a relationship with Him through Christ Jesus our Savior. I will strive each day to follow His ways and to do the good works which He puts in my heart each day through His Holy Spirit that lives in me. It is our duty as Christians to put God first in our lives, and then to support each other as Jesus supports us (Matthew 22:37–40).

Dear Lord,

Thank You for showing us the exceeding riches of Your grace through Your kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. I pray that You will guide us through Your word and Your Holy Spirit to do the good works that You put in our hearts. I ask this blessing not only for those of us who read or hear this prayer, but for all our Christian brothers and sisters around the world. I pray LORD, that You will use our lives to lead others to You so that they too may experience Your true love for them – In Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
