Colossians 4:2-4

In Colossians 4:2–4, the Apostle Paul is teaching the Colossians the importance of prayer, not only for themselves as a Church, but also for others, even their teachers. He says that the church should be “vigilant” in prayer with “thanksgiving.” An important part of Paul’s teaching on prayer is that prayer should be utilized for others as well as for us.

This is a command to pray with intent and thanksgiving.

We all should spend more time in prayer that has intent, not just words. Jesus gives a great example of praying with intent in Matthew 21:22 (NKJV) as He states, “And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.” In Luke 11:9–10 Jesus declares, “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” Jesus pleads with His disciples in John 14:12–14, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” This may sound very simple, but we must understand that there is a requirement for us in prayer; that is that we must believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that He came to save us from sin (John 3:16–17). Our prayers should also be in accordance with the will of God–that it brings glory to Him (John 14:13).

Dear Lord,

Thank You for connecting with us through our prayers. Thank You that we may fellowship one on One with you.  pray today that You will implant in us all the importance of a healthy prayer life with You so that we can pray not only for our personal needs but for the needs of others as well. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
