Colossians 3:9-10
As we put off the old man with his deeds, we are doing away with the things we read about in Colossians 3:8 (NKJV) stating, “But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.” In Colossians 3:9, the Apostle Paul singles out that we should not lie to one another, signifying that we should pay special attention to this teaching. If we are doing away with the old man and the deeds associated with that man, we should be replacing those deeds and attitudes with something, the new man in Christ. We should now be striving to gain the attitudes that Christ taught us as we are now being renewed in the knowledge of Him.
This is a command to put off the ways of the old man in sin.
This is a command to put on the ways of the new man in Christ.
Even though we are striving to put on the new man in Christ, we know that we are still sinful by nature and will continue to make mistakes along the way. We will continue to strive for Christ and do our best to keep our focus on Him. We will seek to learn from our mistakes and keep in mind that God teaches us through these lower times in our lives to grow us in wisdom, knowledge, insight, and understanding – In Christ (Proverbs 1:1–7).
Dear Lord,
It is hard sometimes to keep striving to put on the new man in Christ knowing that we are sinful by nature and that we will make mistakes along the way. Please encourage us through Your Holy Spirit living in us, to be strong for Christ and keep pushing forward as we know that You will guide us through the tough times as well as the good times. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
