Colossians 2:20-23
Jesus fulfilled the requirements of the Law when He died on the cross, so there is no need to continue in trying to appease its rules to earn salvation. We should refer to Colossians 2:14 (NKJV) which states “having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.” These things that involve actions; (do not touch, do not taste, do not handle) may make us look good to others, but they lack sincerity in why we do them, leaving our actions to resemble that of the Pharisees, being self-centered and self-righteous.
This is a promise of salvation through our faith in Christ Jesus, given to us by God’s grace so that we do not have to follow the rules and regulations of the Law to try to “earn” our salvation.
I believe that as Christians, it is very easy to present ourselves in ways, by our actions and words, that can be condescending to others. While our intentions may be innocent, it can give a wrong or unwanted impression of what a Christian is and the view that others should have of us as followers of Jesus. I want to be a reflection of Jesus, and I want to present myself in a way that shows others that God is first in my life, and not in ways that would be viewed as self-imposed or of a false humility. I encourage you to join with me as I make it a point in my life to monitor my words and actions more closely to be “to the praise of His glory” (Ephesians 1:12, 14).
Dear Lord,
Help us to present ourselves in ways that are reflective of Jesus. I want others to see Christ in me, and that cannot be forced upon people but must be shown through Your great love that You have first shown to us. Help us to deny ourselves daily and take up our cross for Christ so that our lives will be a blessing to You and to everyone that we meet in our daily walk—In Christ. (Matthew 10:38). In Jesus name I pray, amen.
