Luke 23:27-31

As Jesus is being led in the procession to His crucifixion, many people followed and the women were brought to tears (Luke 23:27). Jesus said to the women that they should not mourn for Him, but that they should mourn for themselves and for their children (Luke 23:28). Jesus then gives reference to some Scripture (Luke 23:29-30) that is significant of His second coming when those who do not believe in Him will face the coming wrath of God (Isaiah 54; Hosea 10:8; Jeremiah 7:32-34, 9:25-26, 16:14-18; Proverbs 11:3; 1 Peter 4:1-6). Jesus’ last statement in Luke 23:31 is in reference to the fact that if those who do not believe in Him will treat Him with contempt while He is physically there with them, then when He is no longer with them in the physical form, they will treat those who do follow Him with this same attitude.

This is a promise to not weep for what Jesus has done for us, but to weep for those who will never accept Him as the one and only true Savior of the world.

This is a promise of the coming wrath for those who remain in the sinful nature.

This is a promise that hate and discontent will always be present in this world, but Christ Jesus will guide those through it who choose to believe in Him.

Jesus is the Savior of the world. We learn this through not just John 3:17 but throughout the entirety of the Bible. As Christians, we are saying that we believe in the Bible as being the true Word of God. Many may think or choose to believe in parts of the Bible and disregard other parts, but this is why we read and study God’s Word – to learn and grow in our relationship with Him. And for those who have not yet come to believe in Jesus as our Savior, to learn who He is and why He came – to find the proof that is necessary for salvation; it’s there in God’s Word…if you will take the time to seek it. The wrath of God will fall on those who choose not to accept and follow Jesus, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23).

Dear Lord,

Jesus pleaded with the people all the way to the cross to believe in Him and receive life as You intended for us to have with Him. The power of Satan is too strong for us to overcome on our own, and we as Christians are still prone to fall to the temptations that Satan throws at us in his attempt to trick us into falling into sin. But Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life as You teach us in Your Word in John 14:6. All of Your Word leads to Jesus. Please help us to open Your Word daily and study it as it is – truth, that we would find in it the proof of life in Christ as it is only through Him that we are able to overcome the trials and temptations of Satan and receive eternal life in heaven with You. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
