Luke 22:66-71
In this passage is the initial trial of Jesus by the chief priests and the scribes (Luke 22:66). They initially tried to get Jesus to admit that He is the Christ, and in doing so believed they would have grounds to convict Him of blasphemy because they did not believe that He was the Christ. This is an attempt at a false conviction. Jesus knew that they would not believe Him, but He also knew that to complete the mission that He was sent for, He must be betrayed to death on the cross. His reply to the council reflects His thoughts on this topic and lets them know that when this is finished, He will sit at God’s right hand (Luke 22:67-69). Once again, Jesus is questioned of being the Son of God, and this time agrees with the council that He is (Luke 22:70). With this confession of Jesus being the Son of God, the council concludes that no further testimony is needed as Jesus Himself has admitted being the Son of God (Luke 22:71).
This is the trial of Jesus.
This is an example of how Satan can control the minds of man into a one-sided view, but yet as Satan believes he is winning the battle, God uses the event to ultimately bring about good through His eternal plan of salvation in and through His Son, Jesus.
These chief priests and scribes were the most highly esteemed religious people of their time, but Satan had blinded them through self-pride and arrogance to the truth that was in Jesus. However, God is always in control and His plan of salvation for all of man is being played out in this trial of Jesus. It was required that Jesus be sacrificed to death in His innocence to enter into the spiritual world from being a human being to conquer death, sin, and Satan. As Satan believes he is winning the battle, as it may seem he is doing on this earth, God is ultimately in control as Jesus is fulfilling His purpose in being sent into this world…to defeat death, sin, and Satan so that He may rightfully offer forgiveness and eternal life to each of us.
Dear Lord,
Thank You for sending Jesus, Your one and only Son to pay our price for sin and in doing so, defeat death in His being innocent of it (Romans 6:23). As we face trials in our lives, please help us to keep our focus on You as Your ultimate plan for our lives is far greater than anything we could imagine. Please help us to see that Your plan for our lives is only made possible by believing in Jesus and seeking Your will for our lives each day. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
