Luke 22:39-46
Jesus and His disciples have now finished partaking of the elements in the upper room and have taken up a course for the Mount of Olives, a place where Jesus often visited (Luke 22:39). As they arrived, He instructed His disciples to pray as He would go on a little further and He too would pray (Luke 22:41-42). Jesus is about to be betrayed into the hands of the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders (Luke 22:52), and this is His prayer to His Father in heaven just prior to the event. Jesus asks that if it be God’s will, that this cup be taken from Him. This cup, that Jesus refers to is the mission in which Jesus was sent.
Even though Jesus was God in human form, He was able to feel the pressures and stress of a human. This was a requirement in His form of being God and man, that He experience life as a man, and He as God, knew what was about to happen to Him. We are informed in Luke 22:42-43 that in His great stress, He continued to seek that God’s will be done, and He began to sweat drops of blood, a condition called hematidrosis that is a rupturing of blood vessels due to great stress. Jesus came to do God’s will for Him and in taking on the sin of all man, He too was greatly distressed to the point that God sent angels to minister to Him. When Jesus finished praying and had returned to His disciples, He found them sleeping. He woke them and instructed them to continue in prayer to prevent temptation from overcoming them.
This is an example of the human side of Jesus requiring the guidance of His heavenly Father.
This is Jesus preparing to take all sin upon Himself in completing the mission for which He was sent (John 3:16-17).
Jesus took all sin upon Himself to the cross. Just as His disciples had fallen asleep during Jesus’ preparation, we too contribute nothing to helping Jesus fulfill this great event, but in believing that He did so for each one of us, we may receive the reward of eternal life in heaven with Him. John 14:6 says it all!
Dear Lord,
Thank You for sending Your Son Jesus to take all sin upon Himself as the perfect sacrifice not deserving death and yet died with our sin to set us free from it. Please call us all to Yourself that we would respond to that call and accept Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior and reap the reward through Jesus from what He has done on the cross for us…eternal life in heaven with You. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
