Luke 22:35-38
In this passage, Jesus is preparing His disciples for the trying times which will befall them in His absence. There was a time between Jesus’ crucifixion and His sending of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-8) in which Jesus was absent from His disciples both physically and spiritually. The reference to selling one’s garment to buy a sword is not for the purpose of going into an offensive battle, but a common way of protection in self-defense. Jesus quotes Isaiah 53:12 in acknowledging His coming crucifixion.
This is a command to stand strong in Jesus.
This is a unique time in history as Jesus was physically with His disciples and served as their guide to life as He would have of them. In His absence after His crucifixion and following ascension into heaven, He had promised to send His Holy Spirit to be their guide (John 14:15-18), but there would be a short time between these two events when His disciples would be without His presence, be it physical or spiritual.
Today, we are blessed with the presence of Jesus through His Holy Spirit which He sends to live within us as we accept Him and what He did for us on the cross. We are blessed to live with the guidance of the Lord through His Holy Spirit. He is always there waiting for us to call on Him. Don’t try to tackle the trials of life on your own…Jesus is just a prayer away.
Dear Lord,
As we read of the history of the ministry and physical life of Jesus, we see how blessed we are to live in the new covenant in Christ Jesus. He is with us always through Your Holy Spirit that You send to live within each of us as we make our commitment to serve You as our Lord and Savior. Thank You for sending Your one and only Son to save us from sin. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
