Luke 20:41-44

Jesus moves from giving insight about our spiritual relationship of being in heaven in comparison to the relationship of marriage on earth directly to His relationship to King David. He asks the question of how the Christ/Messiah can be the Son of King David when King David said that the LORD spoke to my Lord about sitting at His right hand and that He would make His enemies His footstool (Psalm 110:1). So, if King David calls Him Lord, how could He be his Son? (Luke 20:44).

The Israelites believed that the Messiah would be a human without being divine. Jesus was making the point that even though His earthly line was through King David, His divine nature being sent from God is above King David (Romans 1:3-6).

This is a declaration of the divine nature of Jesus.

John 3:16-21 describes that Jesus was sent from our heavenly Father to save the world from sin and the life found in Him, along with the condemnation that will be the result without coming to believe in Him.
In Luke 20, Jesus is making a transition from the human nature to the spiritual nature of life. Our life here on earth is temporary, but our spiritual lives will go on for eternity either in true life in heaven with our Creator in His everlasting glory, or in what we call hell, being separated from the presence of our Creator and cast into an everlasting darkness of condemnation. Satan caused us to be separated from a pure life with our Creator God because he was cast out of heaven and therefore, in his jealousy and envy of all humans because God created us to reflect His glory (the responsibility that Lucifer/Satan failed to do and in so got him cast out of heaven), he wants us to be cast out of heaven also. The attitude of Satan is that of “If I can’t have it, then I’ll do everything in my power to prevent anyone else from having it either.”

Why is this important? Because the spiritual power of Satan is more powerful than any human, that’s how sin entered the world – because the power of Satan was more powerful than that of Adam and Eve. He tricked them into falling into sin; to disobeying God – and that is sin; disobeying God. The only way that we can overcome the power of Satan and get back into a right relationship with our Creator God is through our Savior Jesus – because He is more powerful than Satan. Nothing we ever do will earn our way into heaven, but by believing and accepting what Jesus has done for us in defeating sin, death, and Satan once for all (Romans 6:4, 8-11, 23; Romans 10:9-13), God gives us life in Him. He does not do this for us because we have earned it, but because He loves us so much and wants to rekindle the lost relationship with us that was lost due to sin (Romans 3:23, 6:23).

Dear Lord,

Thank You for sending Your Son Jesus, who was sent into the world as a human but yet with Your divine nature, that as a human would be acceptable to be the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of all of man, and with Your divinity that is all powerful in overcoming the wages of sin, that You may offer to us true life through what Jesus did on the cross and the victory of the resurrection from the grave in defeating sin, death, and Satan once for all. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
