Luke 19:47-48
In Luke 19:45-46 Jesus cleanses the temple by running out the temple priests who were extorting money from those who came to worship God with their sacrifices. And here in Luke 19:47-48 we find Jesus teaching in the temple daily. The chief priests, scribes, and leaders of the people were very unhappy about this and they wanted to stop Him but were afraid of the people’s response if they did because the people wanted to hear Him.
The chief priests, scribes, and leaders of the people were the prominent people of society. When Jesus humiliated them publicly by running them out of the temple for extortion, He stopped them from making a very large amount of money and greatly damaged their prideful and arrogant ways. Their side-business was ruined. Jesus began teaching in the temple as should He be, and He continued doing this daily which prevented the temple priests from setting up and continuing their extorted ways.
This is an example of following our self-centered will in disobedience to God’s will for our lives, and the results of pride, arrogance, and rebellion in being corrected.
The nature of man is sinful. We all want to seek self-gain and are greedy by nature – that’s the curse of sin. The only way to break the sinful nature is to submit our will to God. To seek the life that He created us for. And the only way to do this is to accept that Jesus died for the sins that we are held captive to and believe that He rose from the grave in victory of defeating sin, death, and Satan once for all. This includes victory over even the sins that we may think are too bad to be forgiven for – but God sent Jesus for that very purpose – to offer forgiveness for all our sins (Romans 6:4, 8-11). Our next step is to accept it, believe it, receive it, and begin living a new life in Christ Jesus. (John 1:10-13; 3:16-21; 8:12; 8:31-36; 14:6)
Dear Lord,
Even the temple priests are subject to sin and the temptations that Satan will throw at us each day. Please help each of us to faithfully put our trust in Jesus, who has defeated sin, death, and Satan for us, and seek Your guidance each day through the work of Your Holy Spirit which lives within us as Your children. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
