Luke 16:16-17
The law and the prophets are referring to the law given to Moses by God in the Old Testament (Exodus 19-40) and the prophets through which God spoke to His people Israel. Jesus said that He came to fulfill the law (Matthew 5:17), and in doing so does not erase the law but establishes the law as the root of the gospel. The law explains the need for the gospel and gives everyone more than enough time to prove themselves to God. Man cannot redeem himself as the sinful nature cannot become pure in and of itself. This shows the need for a Savior; this shows the need for the way, the truth, and the life that is found only in Jesus (John 14:6). The law is the foundation for the gospel; without it we would not realize our need for Jesus.
This is a promise and example of the need for the law in providing the foundation for the gospel.
Jesus says in Luke 16:16 that since the time of John the Baptist the gospel has been preached, and everyone is “pressing into it.” After Jesus died on the cross as our sinless sacrifice to pay the debt worthy for all sin, He made redemption possible through His purity (which is the requirement necessary for redemption) and then arose from the grave in victory over sin, death, and Satan. His newly resurrected life overcame death, sin, and defeated Satan once for all (Romans 6:4-11). The law was fulfilled and new life was found in Christ Jesus (Matthew 5:17). Jesus offers us life through what He has done for us. The law teaches us that the wages of sin is death, and the gospel gives us the gift of God which is life (Romans 6:23). Put your trust in Jesus today and you too will receive a new life – in Christ.
Dear Lord,
Thank You for providing the foundation for the gospel that we may know why we need a Savior; the only true Savior, Jesus, whom You sent to save the world from sin (John 3:16-17). Please open our eyes, hearts, minds, and souls to the gift that You offer us in Jesus, and help us to receive the gift of salvation as we ask forgiveness from Jesus for paying for our sins. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
