Luke 16:14-15

The Pharisees prided themselves on gathering as much money and power as they could in their attempt to appear more important than others. Their motive was self-righteousness and greed with a selfish attitude that was focused only on themselves. Jesus said in Matthew 6:19 that you should not seek earthly treasures but focus on the treasures of heaven, because wherever you put your focus will be the same place you put your heart.

This is a promise, command, and example that the sinful nature desires earthly things, but those who desire a relationship with Jesus will put their focus on heavenly things.

This passage separates the sinful nature of this world from the new nature one gains when he or she puts Jesus first in their life. Jesus teaches us in Matthew 6:33 to seek God’s kingdom and His righteousness first, and all else will fall into place accordingly. God knows our hearts (Luke 16:15), and He knows where our focus is. Let your focus be on Jesus, and you will be amazed at the result.

Dear Lord,

Please help us to see that the devil, through the sinful nature, wants to keep us from having a relationship with You through Your Son Jesus who came to save us from this same sinful nature. Please help us to see that our true treasure is in heaven, and help us to put and keep our focus on Jesus. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
