Luke 12:1-3
The Israelites had long awaited the coming Messiah in which they believed would set them free from the oppressive rule of the Roman government. On hearing the news of Jesus being the Messiah, the people came from all over the countryside to see and hear the Messiah speak and perform miracles.
But the lesson Jesus teaches here, as He has just finished rebuking the Pharisees and scribes, is that the people be aware of the “leaven” of the Pharisees, which Jesus teaches is hypocrisy (Luke 12:1). This “leaven” as Jesus refers to it, is the teaching of the Pharisees that could, as leaven spreads throughout dough, spread throughout the Israelites and lead them away from God. The Pharisees and scribes are teaching as if they are holy, but the motive of their hearts is evil. Jesus teaches that all things will be made known and that nothing will be hidden (Luke 12:2-3). Jesus is teaching that the outward appearance is only a cover of their true self which is revealed in their hearts.
This is a promise that God is omniscient (all knowing).
This is a promise that we cannot hide from God.
This is a command to be pure in heart.
God is omniscient (all knowing) and He knows the motives of our hearts. Jesus stated in John 4:23-24 that a time is coming when those who worship God will do so in spirit because God is Spirit and He desires to be worshiped in spirit. This worship comes from our true self that is found in the desires of our hearts. God desires for us to be pure as He is pure. God desires us to not put on an outer shell that is for a deceitful appearance, but that we submit fully to Him in honest sincere transparency.
Dear Lord,
Please open our eyes, hearts, minds, and souls to the reality that we cannot hide from You. You are all knowing and desire for us to have a pure relationship with You in worship from the sincerity of our hearts. Please fill us with Your Holy Spirit and help us to seek and follow a pure relationship with You as You cleanse our hearts through salvation in Your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
