Luke 11:33-36
Jesus has been teaching the people about the power that Satan and his demons can have over a man, and how Jesus was sent from God and is more powerful than Satan. In this passage Jesus speaks of the light and the darkness. If our eye is good, we can see the light; if our eye is bad we can see only darkness. The light or darkness then fills our whole body (Luke 11:34).
In John 1:6-9 the Apostle John speaks of John the Baptist and says that he came as a witness of the Light that gives light to every man. In John 3:16-21 Jesus teaches that He was sent from God that all who believe in Him would have everlasting life. That He came to be the Savior of the world. That those who do not believe in Him are condemned because they do not believe in Him; that the condemnation is that the light has come into the world, but man loved the darkness (which is evil) because their deeds were evil. Those who live in evil hate the light, but those who live in truth come to the light. In John 14:6 Jesus teaches us that He is the way, the truth, and the life. Jesus teaches us in John 8:12 that He is the light of the world and that those who follow Him will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.
This is an example of the Light of the world (Jesus).
This is an example of the darkness of the world (Satan).
It is important that we do not take this lesson incorrectly; Jesus and Satan are not opposites. Satan is a created being, just as is man. Satan (Lucifer) fell from heaven (Luke 10:18) in his attempt to claim a greater authority than the Almighty God of heaven. Jesus and God are one along with God’s Holy Spirit and have existed for all eternity, past, present, and future. The Light of the world (Jesus) is and always has been more powerful than the darkness of the world (Satan).
Satan is the father of lies, and everything that he puts in our sinful nature is a lie, such as the lie that we can get to heaven without personally asking Jesus to forgive us of our sins and invite Him to live in our hearts through His Holy Spirit in being our guide to eternal life as a child of God. Satan wants to keep us away from God because he is eternally cast out of God’s presence, and in his jealousy and arrogant pride he wants to keep us away from the place in which he once was before his fall from heaven. He was cast into outer darkness.
The reflection of God’s glory that once reflected from him throughout all of heaven has been given to man if we will make the choice to believe in Jesus (the light of the world), and the light of Jesus will shine through us to all those around us and back to our heavenly Father in bringing His glory back to Him. If we seek the light of Jesus, darkness cannot keep its sinful hold on us. God gives us examples of this: go into a dark room and turn on the light; the darkness flees immediately. So it goes with Satan when we invite Jesus into our hearts; the sinful nature flees and the new life in Jesus takes over. But we must keep our focus on God’s will for our lives because Satan is ever lurking to do a hostile takeover of our lives if we give him the opportunity. Keeping our focus on Jesus and God’s will for our lives through daily prayer, study of the Bible (God’s word), and fellowship with other Christians will help us keep the sinful nature out of our lives and let the light of Christ Jesus shine through us. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6).
Dear Lord,
Please help us to see the light that Jesus brings into our lives as we put our trust in Him. Please help us to see that the darkness of this world is the evil trap set by Satan in trying to keep us away from having a fulfilling relationship with our Creator and our Savior. Please bring the light of Christ Jesus into our lives so that we all can experience being a child of God and inherit eternal life through Him in overcoming the darkness of this world. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
