Luke 11:5-8
This passage follows directly after Jesus gave His disciples instruction on how to pray (The Lord’s Prayer). Jesus now gives an example of being persistent. Jesus is directing His disciples to be persistent in their prayers, that their prayers may not be answered immediately but to continue diligently (2 Timothy 2:15-16) in sincere prayer to God in heaven, and He will hear their prayers.
This is a command and example to be persistent in prayer to our heavenly Father.
Many times, we lift our prayers to God to only find ourselves disappointed that God may not give answer to our prayers. Jesus taught His disciples to be persistent in prayer directly after He taught them how to pray. Review the Lord’s Prayer in Luke 11:2-4, and in Matthew 6:9-13, but also take notice of Matthew 6:14-15. The Lord’s Prayer is not just a collection of words to read, but a lifestyle to live. If we are not striving to follow God’s will for our lives, we should not expect that He will give notice to our prayers (2 Timothy 2:15-16).
We also need to be aware that as Jesus has promised to answer our prayers (Luke 11:10), He has promised to answer our prayers that are in our needs, not our wants. And we must also be aware that sometimes we may feel that a prayer is of a need, but God’s ways are greater than our ways and we must trust in Him that He is in ultimate control and is looking to our best interest according to His plan for our lives. A plan that we need to seek each day.
Dear Lord,
Please open our hearts, minds, and souls to the prayer that Jesus taught His disciples and help us to understand the importance of the topics covered in this prayer. Please help us to understand that we must be seeking Your will for our lives in humble submission to You through salvation in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, as we bring our prayers to You in sincerity. Please help us to know the difference between wants and needs, and in seeking Your help with our needs that we should be doing all that we can to help You help us in answering our prayers. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
