Luke 11:1-4

Luke 11:1-4 is an account of Jesus’ disciples asking Him to teach them how to pray. Jesus responds by giving them what we refer to as “The Lord’s Prayer.”

This prayer begins by giving respect and honor to the only one who deserves it, God. The God of heaven is the only One who should rightfully be “Hallowed” (Luke 11:2b, NKJV). To be hallowed is to be set above all and held with highest honor as sacred.

The second sentence of the Lord’s Prayer is calling for the return of the kingdom of God; calling for the return of Jesus when all will be made right in the eyes of God as His will is brought to completion in this world of current sin. That as the rule of God is at harmony in heaven, so will the new heaven and the new earth after Jesus’ return (Luke 11:2c; Revelation 21).

Luke 11:3 is asking the Lord God to give us our daily bread. This is (1) simply asking for the food provisions for the day. (2) For the “food” of the Scripture each day in knowing that we do not live simply from bread alone, but by the words of the LORD (Deuteronomy 8:3; Matthew 4:4; Luke 4:4).

Luke 11:4a is a reminder that we need to ask of God’s forgiveness each day as we live in an imperfect world and we too are imperfect and only redeemed by the blood of Jesus. But as we receive God’s forgiveness, we also need to take on the forgiving nature of Christ Jesus in seeking His will for our lives in obedience to Him. We also must first forgive those who have wronged us if we in turn expect to receive the forgiveness of Jesus.

Luke 11:4b is a personal note from Jesus that as He was led into the wilderness to experience the temptation of the world from Satan (which He overcame without sinning) that He is aware of the temptations that we will face each day, and that God will spare us from falling to temptation if we will keep our focus on Him (1 Corinthians 10:12-13). As a requirement to be the Savior of the world (John 3:16-17) Jesus had to face the same temptations that Satan throws as us. It is a big part of Jesus defeating sin, Satan, and eternal death for us, so that through His overcoming we can overcome if we will believe in Him; that He has defeated sin for us. This is how God delivers us from sin. It is a process that Jesus overcame for us as He proclaims in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

This is the way Jesus taught His disciples to pray.

This is the way we should pray each day.

We are blessed to have the Lord Jesus’ direction for how we should pray so that as we read it and sincerely speak it to the LORD, we find that this prayer covers everything that is necessary for a prayer in the eyes of God. Nothing is missing, all is covered. We need to clear our minds and begin each day with the Lord’s Prayer. It covers everything, as the blood of the Savior covers every sin, this, our Savior gave us a prayer that covers all our needs.

Dear Lord,

Thank You for giving us a prayer directly from Jesus. A prayer that covers all our needs for each day. A prayer that directs us to Your will for our lives that we may be respectful in humble obedience to You and that our daily need for forgiveness of sin and growth in Your Word is recognized each day. Thank Your LORD! In Jesus name I pray, amen.
