Luke 10:1

The number “seventy” is in some translations “seventy-two,” and is somewhat unclear as to which translation is closest in accuracy. Some scholars believe this number of disciples appointed by Jesus is in reference to Genesis 10 where there are seventy-two names listed in the description of the nations of the world after the great flood. If this reference is correct, sending the disciples two by two could also be in reference to the number taken onto the ark; each man and his wife, each pair of animals; two by two (Genesis 7). When the great flood had resided, they came out, two by two, and went into the world.

In this passage, Jesus sends His disciples out into the world, two by two, to prepare the way for His coming.

This is an example of spreading the good news (gospel) of Jesus throughout all the world to prepare everyone for His coming.

When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we become His disciples. Jesus told His closest disciples that in His name repentance and remission of sins should be preached throughout the world (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16: 15; Luke 24:47), and Jesus prays for this before His crucifixion in John 17:20-23. We too should share the good news (gospel) of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior to all those around us!

Dear Lord,

As Christians and Your children (John 1:12-13) we should share the love You have given us through Your Son Jesus with those around us that they too may become open to hear You speaking to their hearts, that in turn they too may open their hearts to receive Your Holy Spirit and eternal life in and through Christ Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Please give us the strength to declare salvation in Jesus to all those around us. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
