Luke 9:57-58

In this passage, someone is telling Jesus that he or she will follow Him wherever He goes. The Apostle Luke does not tell us if this is a man or a woman because the answer applies to all people seeking to follow Jesus, man or woman.

Jesus’ answer to this person is in relation to the challenges that one will face in following Jesus wholeheartedly. Jesus says that even the animals have a home on this earth to go to for security, but His home is nowhere to be found on this earth.

This is a promise that following Jesus will be a challenging experience and will not go without facing trials and temptation as Jesus too has experienced.

The lesson that Jesus is teaching in this passage is that following Him is not a commitment that requires nothing of us. Jesus came to save us from sin as He stated in John 3:16-17, but He also stated in Matthew 22:37-40, as He quotes from Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18 that our main focus should be loving God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and that we should care for one another with the same importance that we would take care of ourselves. This is not a matter to take lightly and it takes a great amount of dedication to follow the teachings of Jesus. However, the rewards that He will give us for following Him will come through the blessings that He will pour out through His Holy Spirit that He will send to live within us if we make this commitment to Him. These blessings will by far exceed anything else you will ever experience in this world – even through trials and tribulations. These blessings are experiencing the true life in Christ that God had originally intended for us.

Dear Lord,

Please help us to see that following Jesus is a commitment that requires action from us. Not to earn our salvation but in our commitment to follow Him, just as Jesus has taken action for us by dying on the cross to save us from sin, we too should have an active life of following Him.  As we follow Jesus, we will still experience trials and temptations, but with Jesus You have promised us through Your Word that we will be able to overcome them all if we will ask Jesus to help us (1 Corinthians 10:12-13). Jesus has no home in this world but is seated at Your right hand in heaven (Psalm 110:1; Mark 14:62). Please help us to see that as we make a commitment to You through believing and accepting Jesus into our hearts through Your Holy Spirit; as we repent/turn from sin and put on a new life in Christ Jesus, we too are no longer at home in this world, but that a new home awaits us in heaven with You for eternity. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
