Luke 9:7-9

Herod is one of the people mentioned in the Bible that have a desire to see Jesus for reasons other than that of sincerity to worship Him. There is no mention of Herod desiring repentance. Herod wanted to see the spectacle of a King of which he was paranoid that would take over his own position of being king. He was also concerned that John the Baptist [whom he had beheaded, (Luke 9:9)] had risen from the dead, or possibly Elijah or one of the prophets had returned (Luke 9:7-8). His desire to see Jesus was only from a self-centered interest and not to hear the message that Jesus was to bring.

This is an example of seeking Jesus for the wrong reasons.

At some point in our lives, we will find ourselves asking God for something that we are praying very sincerely for, but yet He seems not to be hearing us. It could be that even though our unanswered prayer concerns something that is very important to us, this concern could be a want instead of a need. It could be that our focus is on our self-interest instead of seeking God’s will for our lives. Jesus said in Matthew 6:33 (NKJV), “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” We must learn to submit our wants to God’s will for our lives, and then our wants will develop into seeking His will for our lives.

Dear Lord,

We all have a tendency to be selfish and want You to be the god that we design You to be. Please help us to see that we must submit to Your design for us, and that You are solid in Your foundation as the Almighty God. Please help us to see that our purpose is to bring glory to You, and to seek this in all we say and do. The Apostle Paul proclaims in Ephesians 1:13-14, “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.”  Please help us to be to the praise of Your glory. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
