Luke 9:1-6

The group of the twelve disciples of Jesus were the ones who traveled with Him the most. Other than the three (Peter, James, and John) that were chosen by Jesus to partake in an even closer relationship with Him, such as the healing of Jairus’ daughter in Luke 8:51, these twelve were eyewitnesses to the miracles that Jesus performed. The healings of the blind, demon possessed, those with various skin diseases, the feeding of the five thousand, the feeding of the four thousand, and many other miracles performed by Jesus were all witnessed by these twelve.

Jesus is now expanding His ministry to these twelve and empowering them with, “power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases” (Luke 9:1, NKJV). He instructed the twelve to take nothing with them as to rely on their faith in Him to sustain them (He gave them the power – He will sustain them).

It was customary for the Jews to shake the dust off their feet when returning from travel in a Gentile land as to not mix what they considered unclean dust with what they considered pure dust of the land of Israel. For the disciples to shake the dust off their feet when leaving an Israelite town would be an insult to that town, and self-convicting to those who lived there. “So they departed and went through the towns, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere”

(Luke 9:6).

This is an example of the power of Jesus working through His disciples.

We may not have been eyewitnesses to the miracles that Jesus performed while He walked the earth, but if we put our trust in Him, He will empower us to do His will for our lives. The biggest miracle that we all can share is to let His love be seen in our lives; To put God first in our lives and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-40).

Dear Lord,

As Jesus sent His disciples to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal those in need, please help us to share Your Word and conduct ourselves in a way that would be pleasing to You and healing to those around us. You work through us all in different ways – even a kindly spoken word at the right time can be a healing miracle. Use us as You will to bring praise, glory, and honor to You Lord. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
