Luke 8:42b-48

Hebrews 11:1 (NKJV) states, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” And in Hebrews 11:3 the Bible teaches, “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.”

The faith of this woman was so great in believing in the healing power of Jesus that just by touching “the border of His garment” (Luke 8:44) she was healed. She believed! This woman had spent all she had on seeking a cure for her need but had come up empty (Luke 8:43). This woman had nowhere else to turn. Knowing that Jesus had healed others, she believed that Jesus could heal her too.

It is impossible to receive the healing touch of Jesus and Him not know about it. Even in this large crowd of people pressing up against Jesus, He knew that power had gone out from Him (Luke 8:46). When discovered, this woman came forward and fell at the feet of Jesus in humility to Him, just as did Jairus in Luke 8:41. “Now when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before Him, she declared to Him in the presence of all the people the reason she had touched Him and how she was healed immediately” (Luke 8:47).

This is an example of having faith in Jesus.

Having faith in Jesus is believing in Him; that He died in your place to pay your penalty for sin that you may, through what He has done, have eternal life. To not have eternal life is to have eternal death. Eternal death is being separated from the presence of God.

Jairus’ daughter being on her deathbed, and this woman suffering from bleeding for 12 years are the result of sin entering the world through the disobedience of Adam and Eve. Jesus proclaimed in John 3:16-17, “For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

We must realize our need for Jesus before we can come to Him in humble reverence to Him and truly believe in His healing touch. We must acquire a faith that only comes through reaching out to touch Jesus in belief that He exists and is available to us through His Holy Spirit that calls us to Him. It is through our faith in Him that we believe.

Dear Lord,

Sin lives in each of our lives and condemns us to an eternity out of Your presence and into a place called Hell. We must come to a realization of our need for forgiveness through Jesus and believe that in Him is the key to eternal life in heaven with You. You sent Your Son to pay our penalty for sin that we may live. Please help us to see our spiritual need for forgiveness as our physical bodies will eventually deteriorate to the point of death, but if we invite Jesus to live in our hearts through our faith in Him, we will enter into spiritual eternity in heaven. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
