Luke 8:30-33

When Jesus asked the man in Luke 8:30 his name, the demon(s) responded by saying “Legion” (Luke 8:30, NKJV). The man had been possessed by many demons, but even in their vast number, they could not overpower Jesus – they were terrified of Him! The Bible teaches us in James 2:19, “You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!” These demons collaboratively begged Jesus to not send them ahead of the appointed time into what will be their eternal destination, the abyss. Matthew 8:29 states, “And suddenly they cried out, saying, ‘What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?’”

The demons, and Satan, know that their day of being allowed to torment man is coming to an end, and they are in fear of that day. The demons in this passage begged Jesus to allow them to enter into a herd of pigs that were nearby (Luke 8:32). When the demons entered the pigs, they ran as fast as they could to their death in an attempt to escape the presence of the LORD Jesus Christ. The demons were tasked by Satan to take physical life away from the body(s) that they possessed. By allowing the demons to enter the herd of pigs, which immediately ran to their death, Jesus shows us that one human life saved is more important than a whole herd of animals.

This is an example of the power of the LORD Jesus in superiority over demons and Satan.

Satan torments us with the demons of the sinful nature as he strives to hold us in his grasp. The deceitfulness that Satan uses to blind us to the power of Jesus is only a smoke screen that Jesus can and will blow away in a single breath. 2 Thessalonians 2:8 proclaims, “And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming.”

Satan will hold us in doubt and disbelief about the truth of Jesus as long as he can, and the only way to overcome him is by putting our faith in Jesus Christ who will forgive us of the sins we have committed and give us a new life in Him.

Dear Lord,

Before we can overcome the grasp of the sinful nature in our lives, we must first realize that we cannot overcome Satan by ourselves – we must have help. This help can only come from the forgiving power of Jesus who has already defeated Satan once for all. Please help us to put our faith in Jesus and seek Your will for our lives in overcoming Satan and the sinful nature of this world. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
