Luke 8:26-29

            Jesus has just shown His power over the elements of nature as He calmed a storm in which His disciples were in fear for their lives (Luke 8:22-25). He now shows His power over the spiritual world in healing a man from being possessed by a demon (Luke 8:26-29).

            Two things are very important to learn from this lesson;

  1. Jesus has power over demons and their leader Satan.
  2. Demons and their leader Satan, have power over humanity.

The demon-possessed man in Luke 8:26-29 was controlled by the demon that possessed him. He could not overcome the demon through his own desire to do so in and of himself – the demon was more powerful than the man. But when Jesus showed up, the demon – possessed man, “28When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!” (Luke 8:28, NKJV). The demon knew immediately when he saw Jesus that his time of controlling this man was over. The demon was immediately in fear of what Jesus might do to “torment” the unclean spirit. Take note also that the demon recognized Jesus as, “Jesus, Son of the Most High God” (Luke 8:28).

This is an example that Satan and his demons are more powerful than humanity.

This is an example that Jesus is more powerful than Satan and his demons.

This is an example that we can only overcome the evil ways of this world by calling on the name of Jesus as His is the only power that will set us free from the chains and bondage that Satan and his demons strive to hold us in.

Since sin entered the world through Adam, Satan has had a strangle-hold on all of humanity. The only way to break free of the bondage of sin is to call on Jesus – to put our faith in Him as He defeated sin and Satan by dying on the cross for our sins – He has already paid the price for our sins. No matter what type of bondage sin has us wrapped up in, Jesus is, “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). While Satan is more powerful than us, Jesus is more powerful than Satan and He has already defeated him for us. Jesus has never turned away a sincere heart, and He will not turn away from us if we are sincerely seeking Him. Jesus declared in John 3:17, “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

Dear Lord,

Please help us to see that we cannot overcome the power of the sinful nature, which is Satan and his demons, by ourselves, but that You sent Your One and only Son, Jesus, to defeat Satan once for all, so that by believing in Him we can be set free from the power of the sinful nature and begin a new life in Christ Jesus. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
