Luke 6:46-49
The focus of this passage is to obey the teachings of Jesus. Those who were in the presence of Jesus while He was speaking these words would have known, as Jesus states in Luke 6:48b (NKJV), “who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock” is representing those who put their faith in Jesus as He is the rock. King David spoke of God being his rock in 2 Samuel 22:2-3,
“The LORD is my rock and my fortress
and my deliverer;
The God of my strength, in whom I will
trust;
My shield and the horn of my salvation,
My stronghold and my refuge;
My Savior, You save me from violence.
I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy
to be praised;
So shall I be saved from my enemies.”
Jesus is indicating that if they will build the foundation of their lives on Him, the flood will not overcome them. The only people who were able to overcome the “flood” in the days of Noah were the ones who put their trust in the LORD, as the Bible teaches us in Genesis 6. They were the only ones that the flood did not destroy.
The flood was God’s wrath against the wickedness of man. Genesis 6:5-8 states, “Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the LORD said, ‘I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.’ But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.”
Luke 6:49 states, “But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.” Jesus is describing the outcome of those who choose not to follow His teachings. Notice how in Luke 6:49 Jesus says, “…who built a house on the ground…”, which indicates putting faith in the ways of the world and not of God.
This is an example of Jesus using a physical example to explain the spiritual need to follow Him.
This is a promise of the strength and security we will gain by putting our faith in Jesus.
This is a promise of the destruction we will experience by not putting our faith in Jesus.
When the storms and floods of life present themselves, it is important that we have a strong spiritual foundation built on Christ Jesus. Satan will overcome us all with the worries and concerns of this world, and he strives to do so every day, but if we put our faith in Jesus and seek His will for our lives, the Bible teaches us in 1 Corinthians 10:13, “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.”
We need to be aware that the words found in 1 Corinthians 10:13 were written by the Apostle Paul to those who put their faith in Jesus as he states in 1 Corinthians 1:2, “To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every lace call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:.” The “way of escape” is only possible through Jesus. The Apostle Paul teaches us in 1 Timothy 4:8, “For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.”
Dear Lord,
Please help us to see that as we strive through our physical lives to be successful, that as the storms and floods of life present themselves, we need to have a firm foundation in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. One day our physical lives will end and our spiritual lives will then begin in Your glory, but only if we have put our faith in Jesus and strive to follow His teachings. Please guide us through Your Holy Spirit to build a strong foundation in Jesus during our physical lives so that our spiritual lives will be accepted into Your glory in heaven. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
