Luke 6:37-38
This statement is a restating of what Jesus said previously in Luke 6:27-36. Do not judge; do not condemn. But forgive and be giving. Luke 6:38 uses an example of those doing business in the community; use good measure is to be honest with everyone, pressed down as to make sure the whole container is filled; shaken together as to make sure all is settled and the container is full. If we will be honest and sincere in our dealings with others, God will give back to us, “running over” (Luke 6:38e, NKJV).
This is the command that Jesus stated in Luke 6:31, “And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.”
This is the promise that if we will follow the commands of Jesus, our reward/blessings will be given in return as “running over” (Luke 6:38e).
There is a common theme in the teachings of Jesus that runs true; Matthew 22:37-40 states, “Jesus said to him, “’You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind’ [Deuteronomy 6:5]. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’ [Leviticus 19:18]. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”” Jesus states in John 13:34-35, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” If we will follow these words of Jesus, God has promised to give us blessings and rewards that will be “running over” (Luke 6:38e).
Dear Lord,
The teachings of Your Son Jesus are very simple yet seem so hard for us to follow as Satan strives to hinder our relationship with You. Please speak to our hearts and plant within us a desire and a passion to study Your Word that our eyes would be open to Jesus. Please help us to see Jesus as He speaks in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” In Jesus name I pray, amen.
