Luke 4:9-13

Satan tried to use a passage of Scripture out of its proper context in his attempt to get Jesus to disobey God and fall to temptation. Jesus answered this temptation with a quote from Scripture in the proper context. In doing so, Jesus was able to overcome the temptations from Satan. Jesus used Scripture to overcome temptation; this is why the Apostle Paul refers to Scripture as the sword of the Spirit in Ephesians 6:17 (NKJV) as he declares, “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;…”

It is very important that we also take notice of Luke 4:13 in this passage, “Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.” When Jesus died for our sins on the cross, He died for all our sins. The proof is in Luke 4:13, “…when the devil had ended every temptation,…”  Every temptation includes every temptation that all of us have ever experienced. This is very important for us all to understand. Jesus died for you; He died for me; so that you and I and everyone else may be set free from the bondage of sin and experience life in forgiveness – the forgiveness that comes only through the Law being fulfilled in purity that was accomplished through Christ Jesus as He was tempted with every temptation so that when He died on the cross it was for all sin, for all people.

This is an example of using Scripture to overcome temptation.

This is the proof that Jesus experienced every temptation.

This is the spiritual side of Jesus connecting to the human side of man that makes Him acceptable to be the ultimate sacrifice for all the sins of humanity.

It is hard for us to imagine how Jesus could experience all the sins of humanity and yet remain holy and sinless. But we must realize that just because Jesus felt the temptation does not mean that He fell to the temptation. We all feel the temptation that Satan throws at us, but we do not have to give in to temptation. God gave us the armor of God as the Apostle Paul explains to us in Ephesians 6. These are the weapons, such as the sword of the Spirit, that we are to use to fight off the temptations that Satan throws at us.

It is incorrect to believe that once one accepts Jesus as Lord and Savior everything will be perfect from that point in one’s life. But with Jesus in your heart you will have access to fight the winning fight to overcome all the temptations that Satan will throw at you. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Him. (John 14:6).

Dear Lord,

Your plan of salvation is great and above what we are capable of understanding. But You allow us to see pieces of Your great plan in a way that we can put together everything that we need to know in making the choice to believe in Jesus, repent of our sins, and accept everlasting life in Him. Jesus overcame all temptation for us so that we may be set free from it. Please help us to see that we can only be set free from the chains of Satan’s sinful nature by overcoming it with Jesus. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
