Luke 1:46-56
This is Mary’s song of praise to God for being the one God chose to conceive and bear the “Holy One who is to be born” and that He “will be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:35b, NKJV). Mary did not bring praise and glory to herself by saying, “look at me and what I’m going to do,” but she remained humble by recognizing her place in reverence to God. She rejoiced that God “has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant;” (Luke 1:48a), and yet in her lowliness, “all generations Will call me blessed” (Luke 1:48b). Mary notes that God “has scattered the proud in the Imagination of their hearts” (Luke 1:51b), and “has put down the mighty from their thrones” (Luke 1:52a). Mary sees that God has “exalted the lowly” (Luke 1:52b), and “has helped His servant Israel,” in “His mercy” (Luke 1:54).
This is an example of how we should see ourselves in humble submission to God.
We will never be able to give our praise and glory to God unless we realize that we have a need for Him in our lives. God chose Mary for this great honor because in being chosen she did not become filled with self-pride and arrogance, but that in humility she remained committed to God and was willing to seek God’s will for her life in thankful submission to the Almighty God.
Through the words of this “song of Mary” are many possible references to the Scripture of the Old Testament. This indicates that Mary was familiar with the Scripture and in so, sang her song to God from God’s own Word’s. This is a true example of living for God, as we all should strive to be.
Dear Lord,
Thank You for this great example of Mary giving You all the praise, glory, honor, and thanksgiving during a time when You were giving blessings to her; that we would be able to see, as Mary did, that all is from You and all is meant to bring glory to You in humble submission to You through our lives – In Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
