Luke 1:39-45

There is confirmation from Elizabeth to Mary of the important truth in the revelation given to her from the angel Gabriel. When Mary greeted Elizabeth, the baby to be John the Baptist “leaped in her womb” [Luke 1:41, 44 (NKJV)]. At this point Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit; the knowledge of the baby Jesus was given to her, she expressed her blessing on Mary, and she confirmed the “fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord” (Luke 1:45) in speaking of Mary.

This is the confidence and reassurance of those things told to Mary by the angel Gabriel.

It is very important for us to take notice in this passage that Elizabeth did not go to Mary to give her blessing as we would think the lesser would go to the greater, but as Jesus was sent to us from our Father in heaven, Mary (with the conceived baby Jesus in her womb) went to Elizabeth in the same way Jesus seeks us out and calls us out to be His own. Jesus came to us to save us from sin; He took the action necessary to save us from sin; He did the work, we only have to realize our need for Him, believe in Him, and ask Him into our lives as our Lord and Savior. God sent us a gift out of His great love for us. He cannot force His love on us because it would then not be love as love is always giving with a constant desire to be accepted by the receiver (1 Corinthians 13:4-8a), but we must receive the gift freely from our own will, as the gift is offered to us freely from God’s will.

Dear Lord,

Thank You for sending us the gift of salvation in Your Son Jesus, that we may inherit eternal life and experience Your great love for us. We may all ask as Elizabeth did, “But why is this granted to me” (Luke 1:43a), and we know that it is because of Your great love for us that You have sent us this gift, and not because of anything that we have done or earned as gifts are freely given out of love. Thank You Lord for loving us so much that You gave Your one and only Son as a gift to save us from sin. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
