Jude 3-4
In Jude 3-4, Jude expresses the reason why he is writing this letter as he declares in Jude 3-4 (NKJV), “3Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. 4For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.”
While some scholars believe that this letter was written to a single church or a few churches that were dealing with false teachings, it is also likely that this letter was intended to circulate throughout all the Christian churches as a warning and instructions for corrections in dealing with the false teachers that were infiltrating the Church.
This is a command to, “contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3b).
We all are familiar with someone who has attempted to lighten the power of the only true God of heaven and the saving power of Jesus Christ – His One and only Son sent to this earthly world as God in human form, yet sinless and pure. Jude wants us all to know that we, nor anyone else, can lighten the almighty power of God and the conversion of death to life that is found only through putting our faith in Jesus. Jesus gave a warning in Matthew 7:15 declaring, “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.” The Apostle Paul was also aware of the false teachers infiltrating the church as he warns in Acts 20:27-31, “For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God. Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears.”
Dear LORD,
To continually be learning Your word/the Bible and to be continually growing in our relationship is vital for all Christians. To be aware that there are false teachers that will attempt to soften Your word and the truth of salvation in Your One and only Son Jesus is a reality in the world today. Please fill us all with Your Holy Spirit that we would not fall to such false teachings but would be strengthened through the truth of our Savior Jesus. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
