Philemon 1-3

In Philemon 1-3 is the greeting of the Apostle Paul, as he is writing from prison to a fellow Christian and host of a church gathering in his own home. Paul greets those who are fellow laborers in Christ and gives the common blessings of “3Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philemon 1:3, NKJV).

This is a proper greeting for Christians in spreading the grace and peace of God throughout the world.

This letter from the Apostle Paul to Philemon is very short, just 25 verses as is recorded in the New King James Version, but it is very important in addressing humility, forgiveness, and love for one another. Paul first addresses this letter by showing the love and respect for others that Christ Jesus has shown him in his calling. We too should uplift one another in Christ Jesus through the struggles and corrections we need from time to time in this world. Jesus said in Luke 6:27-28, “But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you.”

Dear LORD,

As we begin this study of the Apostle Paul’s letter to Philemon, please help us to see that it is a true story of freedom in Christ Jesus and of the ways in which we are to conduct ourselves as Your children – In Christ. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
