Titus 2:9–10

The instructions from the Apostle Paul found in Titus 2:9–10 in reference to bondservants could be better understood for us today as for employees in obedience to their employers/supervisors in the workplace. The obedience one shows to their superiors in the workplace is reflective of one’s ability to be obedient to God.

This is a command to be obedient to those God has put over us in the workplace.

Work is called work because it is work. Few like it but we all have to do it. It is great for those of us who love the work we do, as is best for everyone, but the truth is that work is a command from God even before sin entered the lives of humanity. In Genesis 2:15 the Bible teaches, “Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.” It was not until after this, as we learn in Genesis 2:16, that God gave the first command which requires obedience from the man to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God has always intended for us to have something constructive to do with our lives. God gave the Law to Moses to show man that he was incapable of becoming righteous after sin had enter humanity, with the intent to turn sinful man to God for salvation. God sent His One and only Son Jesus to save the world from sin; the only requirement then became to believe in Jesus as the Messiah – the Savior of the world (John 1:29; 3:16-17). And in following the way of Jesus is to follow His command to love one another as He has first loved us (John 13:34-35), and to love the LORD our God first, and then to love one another (Matthew 22:37–40) which is a quote of the Law given to Moses through the fulfillment of it in love (Romans 13:10). So in the end, why is it that we have to work? To learn obedience to God – that He is in control of our lives and that we need Him and His guidance to be successful.

Dear LORD,

I believe that You intended for work to be a blessing and a time of reflection for us as we go about our day and ponder our relationship with You. Sin entered the world and turned work into a task that became harsh and uncomfortable. Please help us to be respectful in the workplace to those You have put over us that we would be a reflection of Christ Jesus always. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
