Titus 2:1–5
The Apostle Paul has spoken to Titus concerning the appointing of the elders (Titus 1:5–9) and has given warning concerning false teachers (Titus 1:10–16). He then begins Titus 2 with instructions for Titus of how he should teach the members of the church congregation. He declares in Titus 2:1–5 (NKJV), “1But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: 2that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; 3the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things—4that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.”
This is a command to teach the ways of God in the Church.
This passage of instructions for Titus from the Apostle Paul is a list of guiding instructions for us all. This list of things becoming for a Christian man and woman are not hard to follow – it is our will to do so that is the problem. We too often get caught up in the worldly ways (which is just another way of saying “the sinful nature”) and decide for ourselves what is right or alright in God’s eyes for ourselves. The list of instructions found in Titus 2:1-5 is a list that we all should memorize and then strive to follow; not as a task or chore, but as a desire to grow in our relationship with Jesus.
Dear LORD,
We all want to be good Christians, and we all want to bend the rules for just ourselves so that we can pretend to be better Christians than we really are. The truth is that we are all hopelessly lost in sin without the forgiveness of Christ Jesus, and we all need to give up our own will and follow Your will for our lives. Please help us to do so through the guidance of Your Holy Spirit living within our hearts. In Jesus name I pray, amen.
